Nuclear trivia—reveal

The answer: From 1977 to 2025, the NRC approved 172 uprates. Above, these uprates are graphed by type, size, and year of approval. As discussed in last week’s trivia question, uprates are broken down into three categories: Extended power uprates (EPUs), which represent a greater than 7 percent capacity increase. Stretch power uprates (SPUs), which represent between a 2 and 7 percent capacity increase. Measurement uncertainty recapture power uprates (MURs), which represent a less than 2 percent capacity increase. Of the NRC’s 172 approved uprates, there have been 73 MURs, 65 SPUs, and 34 EPUs. The largest uprate ever approved by the NRC was for Clinton. In 2002, the regulator allowed Constellation to pursue a 579 MWt, 20 percent EPU for the unit. Looking to the other side of the spectrum, the smallest uprate ever approved by the NRC was for Comanche Peak-2. In 1999, the regulator allowed Vistra to pursue a 34 MWt, 1 percent MUR for the unit.
