U.S. nuclear capacity factors: More power on order

U.S. nuclear capacity additions are falling short of ambitious expectations set (and then reset) in recent years. Despite construction permits submitted or approved at this writing, new commercial, utility-scale nuclear generation is still a few years away from operation. Still, as has been cataloged year over year in this annual Nuclear News capacity factors survey, the fleet’s capacity factors have held steady since making significant gains during the 1990s. This year, the U.S. fleet’s median design electrical rating (DER) net capacity factor, calculated over three years of generation, is 91.29, up slightly from the 91.13 median recorded in 2020–2022. While the fleet continues to perform well, U.S. utility-scale electricity generation is increasing and outpacing any nuclear gains. With total generation up 2.8 percent from 2024 to 2025, the share of electricity generated by nuclear energy shrank. The nuclear generation share was 19.8 percent in 2000 and just 17.7 percent in 2025, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration data. That 17.7 percent of generation came from about 785 terawatt-hours of nuclear generation, up from about 782 TWh in 2024, when nuclear energy’s contribution accounted for 18.1 percent of generation.
