Nuclear trivia—reveal

The answer: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission expects to receive 32 uprate applications from 2026 to 2032. Those uprates are often completed in conjunction with equipment modifications or replacements and are broken down into three categories. Measurement uncertainty recapture power uprates (MURs) represent a less than 2 percent capacity increase. New generic schedules issued in 2024 give the NRC six months to review an MUR. Stretch power uprates (SPUs) represent between a 2 and 7 percent capacity increase. The NRC has 9 months to review an SPU. Extended power uprates (EPUs) represent a greater than 7 percent capacity increase. The NRC has 12 months to review an EPU. Constellation has more uprates planned than any other company; it’s aiming to complete five EPUs and seven MURs by the end of 2030, though it hasn’t yet disclosed which of its 21 reactors it is targeting. Overall, with 20 of the 32 total planned uprates being EPUs, reactor operators expect to add a total of 2,422 MWe by the end of 2032. That’s about the capacity of a two-unit, grid-scale nuclear power plant. For example, Catawba in South Carolina has a total net capacity of 2,431 MWe. Go deeper: To learn more about the current landscape of uprates and capacity factors in the U.S., look no further than the pages of this month’s issue of Nuclear News.
