National labs drive nuclear innovations and uprates for the U.S. fleet

As the United States faces surging electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence, data centers, and a push to bring manufacturing back home, Idaho National Laboratory is leading an effort to modernize and expand the nation’s nuclear power capabilities by revamping the Department of Energy’s Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) Program. “The stakes have never been higher,” said Bruce Hallbert, national technical director of the program. “We’re at a unique inflection point and opportunity for commercial nuclear power. Revamping the LWRS Program reflects our response to the administration’s executive orders.” The LWRS Program centers on four integrated pathways: Capacity expansion—Boosting output from existing plants, advanced fuel strategies, and thermal efficiency improvements. Plant optimization—Improving efficiency and performance by deploying digital technologies and AI-driven tools. Long-term performance—Extending plant lifetimes through advanced materials research, aging management programs, and predictive maintenance strategies. Protection and assurance—Keeping plants competitive while ensuring security. Go deeper: To learn more about the details of the LWRS program, read Donna Kemp Spangler’s full feature on Nuclear Newswire.
