도입부: In this issue: Robinson gets its SLR; the NRC in Congress; a deal among Oklo, LANL, and Nvidia; a new fuel announcement from DOE-NE; an ITER regulation decision; and more.NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center hosts nuclear propulsion cold-flow tests
Nuclear rocket propulsion has been investigated for decades, and NASA and the Atomic Energy Commission carried out significant testing in the 1960s as part of the Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application program. NERVA chased the potential of the efficiency and energy density of nuclear thermal propulsion to extend our reach to new space frontiers before the program ended in 1973. Now, NASA has completed a series of cold-flow tests with a flight reactor engineering development unit (EDU)—the first experiments of this kind since NERVA. That EDU was designed and built by a team at the BWXT Innovation Campus in Lynchburg, Va. It underwent more than 100 tests simulating operational fluid-dynamic responses. Measurements of pressure, temperature, acceleration, and strain within the reactor were captured across a range of operating conditions. Those tests were conducted at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., and demonstrated that the EDU was “not susceptible to destructive flow-induced oscillations, vibrations, or pressure waves that occur when a moving fluid interacts with a structure in a way that makes the system shake.” Go deeper: The full feature, which includes several photos of the EDU being installed and prepared for cold-flow testing, can be read on Nuclear Newswire.
