Japan’s TEPCO resumes operations; Monday earthquake triggers response

Commercial operations have resumed at Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant in Japan’s Niigata Prefecture, Tokyo Electric Power Company has announced. Last week’s commercial restart of Unit 6, a 1,315-MWe boiling water reactor, is the first for a TEPCO nuclear facility since the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami triggered an accident at the utility’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. CNL to manufacture test bundles of thorium-based fuel

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories has signed an agreement with Chicago-based Clean Core Thorium Energy to manufacture demonstration irradiation bundles of Clean Core’s ANEEL (Advanced Nuclear Energy for Enriched Life) fuel. The fuel is made with a combination of thorium and high-assay low-enriched uranium and is designed for use in pressurized heavy water reactors, such as Canada’s CANDU fleet. Generative model explores tungsten microstructure under fusion conditions

Researchers have developed a model to generate images that serve as synthetic data close-ups of tungsten surfaces under fusion reactor conditions. Tungsten is a top-choice material for plasma-facing components in fusion machines, so understanding tungsten’s performance is critical to the safety and longevity of component designs. Nuclear trivia—reveal

The answer: Coming in at 1,355 MWe, South Carolina has the highest operational nuclear capacity per 1 million persons (MW/M) of any state in the U.S and in fact has a higher capacity per capita than any country in the world. (At 920 MW/M, France claims the highest capacity per capita at the country level.) Alabama (with 1,089 MW/M), Illinois (with 926 MW/M), and New Hampshire (with 905 MW/M) are the three runners up trailing South Carolina. The bottom end of the chart contains some of the most populous states. California comes in last place with 57 MW/M—it is the only nuclear-powered state to not have an operational capacity per capita at least in the hundreds. On the world stage, its capacity per capita is in between China (39 MW/M) and Romania (69 MW/M). Coming in above California on the low end of the chart are Washington (157 MWe), New York (164 MW/M), and Texas (168 MW/M). Go deeper: To see more about the landscape of each state’s nuclear sector, and to look closer at the capacities of countries around the world, dig through the Annual Reference Section in the March 2026 issue of Nuclear News.
