Task force charts growing interest in civilian maritime nuclear applications

Over the past 50 years, there has been little momentum around U.S. civilian maritime nuclear power—but that trend is beginning to change. Ports, shipping companies, and coastal and other waterway communities are looking for ways to not only decarbonize but also build energy resilience, and the reality is that there are few scalable zero-carbon options other than nuclear energy. The American Nuclear Society recognizes the opportunity and challenges associated with the advancement of nuclear maritime applications. In 2025, the Operations and Power Division (OPD) of ANS initiated a Civilian Nuclear Maritime Task Force (ANS Maritime Task Force) to act as convener of Society members and participants to integrate into the process of advancing international codes and standards, regulatory harmonization, workforce development, and public policy engagement. The challenges: There are a wide array of issues to overcome before the broad deployment of commercial maritime nuclear technologies can be achieved, including: How emergency planning zones (EPZs) and emergency response responsibilities are defined for mobile or port-adjacent nuclear assets; What the practical emergency response apparatus looks like across operators, ports, and jurisdictions; The establishment of robust training pipelines that bridge the commercial nuclear, naval nuclear, shipbuilding, and advanced manufacturing sectors. Go deeper: Of course, these challenges also represent chances for new innovation, and they are the focus of the ANS Maritime Task Force’s current efforts. To learn more about the work that the group is doing, read Stephens and Adeyeye’s full feature on Nuclear NewsWire.
