Meta strikes deals with Vistra, Oklo, TerraPower

On January 9, tech giant Meta made waves by announcing three new agreements with Vistra, TerraPower, and Oklo. These deals aim to see Meta supporting both uprates at existing nuclear power plants and the development of new advanced reactor projects, and in total could see the company financing up to 6.6 GW of new and existing energy by 2035. These projects will support the hyperscaler’s ever-growing data center– and AI-driven energy needs. Go deeper on Nuclear NewsWire.

The Meta-Vistra deal: A closer look

With last Friday's announcement regarding its vision for nuclear energy, Meta has entered into 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) for more than 2,600 MW of electricity from a combination of three Vistra-owned nuclear plants to support the tech behemoth's planned operations in the PJM region. Communities and companies answer NYPA’s nuclear solicitations

Eight communities and 23 companies have expressed interest in participating in New York state’s plan to develop at least 1 gigawatt of new nuclear power in the upstate area. The communities and companies are responding to solicitations from the New York Power Authority for developers and partners who want to support the agency’s advanced nuclear power projects and are able to provide viable project concepts, as well as for communities to host nuclear facilities and backers that could support such projects. Where states stand on nuclear

Nuclear energy is entering a new era—and policymakers are driving that shift. Governors, energy advisors, legislators, and regulators play a critical role in shaping state policies and regulations that can support the existing nuclear fleet and can accelerate the development, demonstration, and commercial deployment of next-generation nuclear energy. Nuclear trivia—reveal

The answer: Fourteen U.S. states have never hosted a nuclear power plant. Taken in sum with the 8 states that once hosted an NPP but no longer do, we have 22 states without nuclear plants and 28 states with. Those 14 states that have never hosted a nuclear power plant still maintain connections to the nuclear world, however. With that in mind, below is a list of each state to never host a nuclear power reactor, and a (brief, noncomprehensive) nod to a nuclear sector connection that state nonetheless maintains: Alaska is the home of the Eielson Air Force Base, where the DOD plans to deploy a microreactor with reactor start-up Oklo. Delaware passed legislation last year to form its Nuclear Energy Feasibility Task Force. Hawaii is currently considering legislation to form its own Nuclear Energy Task Force within the Hawaii State Energy Office. Indiana partnered with nuclear start-up First American Nuclear last year; the company plans to site its EAGL-1 SMR in the state. Kentucky is home to the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, where companies like GLE and General Matter are planning new projects. Montana in 2021 passed a law to transfer the power to authorize the construction of nuclear power plants from the public to the legislature. Nevada is home to the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC), a facility recently used by start-up Valar Atomics. New Mexico is home to Los Alamos National Laboratory, which plays a key role in the U.S. nuclear landscape. North Dakota is currently conducting a feasibility study on bringing advanced nuclear to the state. Oklahoma utility Grand River Dam Authority recently formed a four-utility consortium to bring new nuclear to it and Nebraska. Rhode Island is home to the Rhode Island Nuclear Science Center, a 2-MW light water research reactor at the University of Rhode Island. Utah has nuclear projects progressing on many fronts, from isotopes, to uranium mining, to enrichment, to new power reactors. West Virginia in 2022 repealed its moratorium on new nuclear power plant construction. Wyoming is another up-and-comer like Utah; one highlight is TerraPower’s Kemmerer project.
