AI at work: Southern Nuclear’s adoption of Copilot agents drives fleet forward

Southern Nuclear is leading the charge in artificial intelligence integration, with employee-developed applications driving efficiencies in maintenance, operations, safety, and performance. The tools span all roles within the company, including improved maintenance efficiency, risk awareness in maintenance activities, and better-informed decision-making. The data-intensive process of preparing for and executing maintenance operations is streamlined by leveraging AI to put the right information at the fingertips for maintenance leaders, planners, schedulers, engineers, and technicians. Key agents: While AI agent applications range from corporate functions to technical roles, there are three agents that particularly stand out to support plant maintenance teams: The Fleet Operating Experience agent, which revolutionizes access to OE data. By streamlining work package preparation and troubleshooting equipment issues and craft work preparation, the OE agent enables teams to optimize operations and maintain peak efficiency. This results in more agile and responsive maintenance teams capable of addressing challenges with safety, precision, and efficiency, which ultimately improves equipment reliability. The Safety Advisor Copilot, which provides instant access to safety procedures and OSHA guidance, enabling broader worker knowledge and ensuring streamlined work preparation. It can be used by work planners to make sure that applicable safety information is included in work packages and is easily accessible by technicians to find information quickly. The Organizational Effectiveness & Performance Improvement agent, which is instrumental in fostering high-quality improvement plans. By assisting in the development of these plans and effectively communicating underlying issues, this AI agent facilitates the timely resolution of problems.
