In May, the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator in Greifswald, Germany, concluded an experimental campaign by sustaining a plasma with a high triple product for 43 seconds. The machine far surpassed its own previous performance with a value that the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics says “exceeds previous tokamak records for long plasma durations”—in part because of a fuel pellet injection system developed by researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The answer: There are 40 power reactors in the U.S. that are no longer in service, not including Palisades Nuclear Generating Station, which was recently transitioned back into operational status after initially closing in 2022. With the intervention of Microsoft at Clinton, the list of closed plants hopefully won’t get longer any time soon. Indeed, with momentum continuing at the shuttered Duane Arnold (closed in 2020) and Three Mile Island-1 (closed in 2019), we may see this list grow shorter still. Some highlights: Aside from the reactors already discussed, some other recent U.S. closures have been New York’s Indian Point-2 and -3 in 2020 and 2021, respectively, along with Peach Bottom-1, which closed in 2019. The first power reactor in the U.S. to close its doors was the short-lived 75- MWe Hallam, a liquid metal–cooled, graphite-moderated reactor that shut down in 1964. An international look: The U.S. has more closed power reactors than any other country, but the runners up aren’t too far behind. The U.K. has 34 shuttered reactors, with the most recent additions being Hinkley Point B2 and Hunterston B2, which both closed in 2022. Germany has 31 closed reactors, Japan has 26, Russia has 17, France has 14, and Canada has 7. In all, there are 22 countries with shutdown power reactors.
