Powering the future: How the DOE is fueling nuclear fuel cycle research and development

To understand the intricacies of the nuclear groundswell in the U.S., it’s critical to analyze activity and progress from state to state. One way to understand the nuclear frontrunners across the country is to look at DOE funding. NEUP: This feature explores DOE work in the Nuclear Energy University Program, which works to fund nuclear energy research, provide educational support, and make equipment upgrades more financially feasible, among other goals. Of the 1,348 funded projects analyzed here, it’s clear that NEUP support covers a wide range of projects and topics, from waste management to fuel safety to simulation and modeling tools and beyond. Overall, the program has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in initiatives across the nuclear fuel cycle. Partnering up: Nuclear research is not often undertaken alone. This feature also takes a look at where the collaborative hotspots in the country are. Not surprisingly, the national laboratories emerge as the major hubs where people with diverse expertise are brought together to tackle complex issues. Idaho National Laboratory, with 406 collaborators, manages more research partners than any other institution in the country. Go deeper: Read Daniel E. Rodriguez and Supathorn Phongikaroon’s full article on Nuclear NewsWire.
