도입부: In this issue: The DOE makes HALEU allocations, several updates from Utah, the New World screwworm appears in an isolated incident in Maryland, and more.DOE allocates HALEU to Antares, Standard Nuclear, and ACU/Natura
The Department of Energy made conditional commitments yesterday to provide high-assay low-enriched uranium to three companies: reactor developer Antares Nuclear; fuel fabricator Standard Nuclear; and Natura Resources, which is backing Abilene Christian University’s development of a small Molten Salt Research Reactor and pursuing a commercial reactor design of its own. Following a contracting process, some of the companies “could receive their HALEU later this year.” Go deeper on Nuclear NewsWire.

While the halls of Duane Arnold nuclear plant may be mostly quiet today, it was a completely different story in 1987. Then, when the 538-MWe single-reactor plant was only halfway through its life, there was always work to be done. So what did the average day look like for an employee there almost forty years ago? That is the topic of a photo feature article in 1987’s October issue of Nuclear News in which an NN writer and photographer followed one Dave McGill through his shift. The work: In the article, McGill (whose precise job title was technical support specialist) identifies himself as a mechanic for Iowa Electric Light & Power Company. He also uses the term “metal bender” to describe his job: performing maintenance on pumps, valves, piping, and other components to keep a plant running safely and efficiently. He goes on to explain that “in the trenches” of Duane Arnold, he is responsible for maintaining a wide variety of plant systems. “In our shop, we get a variety of things to work on—from a drinking fountain to the main turbine.” See more: The full feature includes photos of McGill doing technical work like resetting piston seals in the reagent pump of the chlorine monitor in the main circulating water system and adjusting the valve stem packing on a motor-operated valve in the HPCI. It also shows more humdrum aspects of the day, like signing out a wrench at the hot tool crib. The photo feature can be found in the October 1987 issue of NN (pp. 43–44). Be sure to take a look at the full cover photo while you’re there! (ANS members only)
