The Maine Maritime Academy is one of only six such institutions in the U.S.—and one of only 79 in the whole world. MMA maintains a distinct history in nuclear education; its first courses on the subject appeared in the fall semester of 1960. Quick expansion: Only a year later, MMA expanded its instruction to be supplemented by laboratory work on the Nuclear Chicago Corporation’s Model 9000 subcritical training reactor. A second reactor and nuclear power plant simulator were added a few months after that. A shift: This rapid expansion didn’t last forever, however. In 1995, as the industry reached its economic nadir, the program was suspended. In the early 2000s, as climate awareness grew, MMA’s engineering faculty reintroduced nuclear into a few special-topic courses, but these offerings were only a shadow of what the academy once offered. New change: Fast-forward twenty years to 2023, the year the academy’s then president established the MMA Nuclear Working Group to analyze the recent industry renewal and work to reestablish a nuclear engineering minor program. In the fall semester that year, “Introduction to Nuclear Engineering Operations” returned to the curriculum, with many more courses coming shortly after. This year, MMA officially voted to reconstitute its nuclear engineering minor, and a new chapter of nuclear education at the academy is here. Researchers announced earlier this month that they have completed major construction of the Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking Array (GRETA), a precision tool for gamma ray spectroscopy that will reportedly be 10 to 100 times more sensitive than previous nuclear science experiments. A team of scientists and engineers has now completed construction of GRETA’s key components: electronics, computing, and mechanical systems as well as the majority of the sensitive, high-purity germanium detector modules. Media outlets have been abuzz this week with news of cesium-137 contamination in Great Value frozen shrimp, according to a Food and Drug Administration report. The amount of Cs-137 in the bags of shrimp, which are sold at Walmart, was more than 17 times lower than the FDA’s derived intervention level for the radioactive isotope and as such “would not pose an acute hazard to consumers.” The contaminated shrimp was barred from entering the country, but even so, the FDA is advising Walmart and consumers toss other Great Value–brand shrimp.
