North Carolina Collaboratory is funding a future of advanced reactors

The North Carolina Collaboratory is a research funding agency with a goal is to help transform research into practical applications for the benefit of North Carolina’s state and local economies. To that end, it engages in research projects related to advanced nuclear energy, among other initiatives. The collaboratory has stewarded about $225 million in appropriations from the state legislature that have been invested in more than 600 research projects, including nuclear. TBT: Yesterday and tomorrow in African nuclear

In 1984, South Africa became the first nuclear-powered country in Africa when Unit 1 at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station entered commercial operation. Project details: The 930-MWe Koeberg-1 is a pressurized water reactor that was designed and built by a consortium of French companies led by Framatome. It is owned and operated by Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned electric utility. Unit 1’s opening was shortly followed up by the country’s second, and so far last, reactor, Koeberg-2, another 930-MWe PWR. The plant’s design was based on Tricastin nuclear power plant in France. The total cost of the project, according to a September 1985 Nuclear News article, was $1.5 billion dollars (roughly $4.5 billion when adjusted for inflation). It was at the time the largest contract ever entered into between France and South Africa. The construction of both reactors progressed on schedule, taking 79 months. Unit 1 took 129 days in commissioning time, while Unit 2 took 111. A bombing: On December 18, 1982, before Koeberg was loaded with fuel, explosions rocked the site. NN reported in January 1983 that “officials said that the blasts were definitely ‘of a criminal nature.’ The explosions, four in all, occurred within the nuclear island in the building containing the electrical cables and other safety-related equipment.” Because the bombing took place on a Saturday, the site was relatively vacant, and nobody was injured. The African National Congress, a key organization in the country’s liberation movement, immediately took credit for the attack. In 1995, Rodney Wilkinson, a worker at the plant, came forward to personally explain how he perpetrated the bombing. It was among the most damaging and successful attacks on a nuclear plant ever. The future: Today, along with plans for life extensions at Koeberg, South Africa plans to build a new, 4-gigawatt nuclear power plant. Elsewhere in Africa, Egypt is progressing on El Dabaa, which will contain four 1,200-MWe VVERs. Being built in collaboration with Russia’s Rosatom, Egypt hopes to begin producing its first nuclear power within the decade.
