도입부: In this issue: Work advances on a TRISO fabrication facility, nuclear science is protecting rhinos and testing pistachios, a swarm of jellyfish shuts down France’s Gravelines, and more.Work advances on X-energy’s TRISO fuel fabrication facility
SMR developer X-energy, together with its fuel-developing subsidiary TRISO-X, has selected Clark Construction Group to finish the building construction phase of its advanced nuclear fuel fabrication facility, known as TX-1, in Oak Ridge, Tenn. It will be the first of two Oak Ridge facilities built to manufacture the company’s TRISO fuel for use in its Xe-100 SMR. Go deeper on Nuclear NewsWire.

For the uninitiated, Dubai chocolate is a candy bar filled with pistachio and tahini cream and crispy pastry. Pistachios are routinely tested for aflatoxin contamination to ensure safety, but the conventional, lab-based testing process is time-consuming and expensive. But a technique developed in a nuclear science laboratory could help pistachio growers and handlers around the world detect the toxins “faster, cheaper, and more effectively than ever before.” Go deeper on Nuclear NewsWire.

The IAEA and the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, have begun officially implementing the Rhisotope Project, an innovative effort to insert radioisotopes into the horns of live rhinos to combat poaching and trafficking. This will make the sought-after horns detectable by an estimated 10,000 radiation portal monitors that are already in use around the world. Go deeper on Nuclear NewsWire.

For 25 years, I’ve worked across technical industries on three continents, from defense and aviation to energy and nuclear. The core of my work has always been the same: building teams to meet complex missions. But I’ve never seen anything like the challenge and opportunity we now face in nuclear. The answer: By one metric, 1969 was the biggest year for nuclear power up to that point, with four countries having their first power reactors enter commercial operation: The Netherlands, in January, with Dodewaard, a 55-MWe BWR. Spain, in February, with José Cabrera, a 142-MWe PWR. India, in October, with Tarapur-1 and -2, twin 15o-MWe BWRs. Switzerland, in December, with Beznau-1, a 365-MWe PWR. Other notables: Two other years saw the entry of three countries into the commercial nuclear power sector. In 1978, South Korea, Taiwan, and Ukraine all joined the world of nuclear, and in 1983, Hungary, Lithuania, and Slovenia did the same. Decadal view: The 1970s has been the most popular decade for nuclear newcomers, with a whopping 12 countries having their first year of commercial operations from 1970–1979. As for the remaining decades, the ’50s saw the first 4 nuclear countries, the ’60s had 8, the ’80s had 6, and the ’90s had 3. The first decade of the 21st century marked a disappointing milestone; it’s the only decade since the birth of nuclear power to see no new countries enter commercial operation for the first time. The 2010s just had one country, and the 2020s (so far) have had only two.
