New coolants, new fuels: A new generation of university reactors

Today, 25 nuclear research reactors are operating in universities across the country and have been for a long time—about 58 years on average. As new projects aim to refresh this aging fleet, they are facing some of the same obstacles as the commercial side of the nuclear sector. The obstacles: Regulatory uncertainty, funding, fueling, siting, and deployment speed all challenge both the industry and the academy. There is also a diversity of reactor types at play, meaning each university will be walking down a markedly different path. Some institutions are pursuing grid-scale light water reactors, while others are investing their resources into non-LWR designs. The way forward: The task at hand is as exciting as it is complicated. To explore the progress being made, project leaders from three universities, each of which have a different industry partner, talked with Nuclear News about what work they have accomplished so far and what is on the horizon in the near term. Go deeper: To read the whole feature on Abilene Christian University and its partnership with Natura Resources, the University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign and Nano Nuclear, and Pennsylvania State University and Westinghouse, visit Nuclear NewsWire.
