If you take to Google or Wikipedia looking for an answer to which still-operating nuclear power reactor is the oldest, you’ll likely find this answer: Beznau-1, Switzerland’s first commercial nuclear power reactor. Most sources report that Beznau-1 entered commercial operation in September 1969. The U.S.’s Nine Mile Point-1 entered commercial operation on December 1, 1969, so it seems that Switzerland has the U.S. beat by a few months. That is, unless you visit the Nuclear News archives, where a 1970 article on Beznau reads: On Christmas Eve 1969, after successful 12 weeks of trial operation, Switzerland’s first commercial nuclear power plant, located on Beznau Island, received provisional acceptance, and thus commercial production of energy began. So, Beznau is not the oldest power reactor still in operation. It seems safe to conclude that, if you measure by when commercial operation officially began, Nine Mile Point-1 was first by a few weeks. The details: Beznau is still a remarkable, historic reactor. It marked Switzerland’s entry into the nuclear sector and was the key solution to increasing energy demands in the country clashing with the “exhaustion of favorable topographical locations for additional hydro plants.” While new oil-fired plants were on the table to meet energy needs, they faced “strong opposition from those who feared detrimental effects from the sulfurous exhaust fumes.” The NN article, concludes, “It can be considered a happy coincidence that, just at that time, a breakthrough was made to economic nuclear power generation.” Go deeper: Read more about the construction of the world’s (second) oldest operational nuclear power plant in the February 1970 issue of Nuclear News (pp. 47–50).
