The nuclear outlook on the Big Beautiful Bill

The dust has settled: It’s been one month since President Trump signed H.R. 1, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, after a lengthy and contentious reconciliation process. As drafts of the bill evolved through committees, the House, and the Senate, the fate of federal support for nuclear energy projects was often obfuscated. Go deeper on Nuclear NewsWire.

Nuclear trivia—reveal

The answer: At 500 MWe, the smallest currently operational commercial power reactors in the U.S. are Units 1 and 2 at Prairie Island nuclear plant. Prairie Island is located in Welch, Minn., along the Mississippi River, and is operated by Xcel Energy. Units 1 and 2 are Westinghouse-supplied pressurized water reactors. They entered commercial operation in December of 1973 and 1974, respectively. Aside from being notable for its size and its status as one of Minnesota’s only nuclear power plants, Prairie Island is also one of just two nuclear sites with developed plans for clean hydrogen production in the works. Xcel plans to use high-temperature electrolysis at the plant as a pilot project to demonstrate the benefits of this nuclear power application. While these plans were first announced in 2022 with production originally slated for 2024, the Department of Energy announced in January that production could now be expected this year. Another record: The smallest single-unit plant in the U.S. is the 576-MWe Ginna nuclear power plant, situated on the southern shore of Lake Ontario in New York state. It is owned and operated by Constellation. Among the oldest still operational nuclear power plants in the country, Ginna first reached criticality in November 1969 and entered commercial operation in July 1970. Like the units at Prairie Island, Ginna contains a two-loop, Westinghouse-supplied PWR.
