Eden Radioisotopes tackles isotope shortage

Chris Wagner, who has more than 40 years’ experience in nuclear medicine, cofounded Eden Radioisotopes to address critical isotope shortages. Why it matters: Eden’s initiative provides a stable domestic source of essential isotopes like molybdenum-99 and lutetium-177, crucial for diagnostic imaging and radiotherapeutic treatments. These isotopes are vital for detecting and treating conditions such as cancer and heart disease. The big picture: Eden plans to build a dedicated reactor to meet global demand, mitigating supply issues caused by aging infrastructure and geographic constraints. The facility aims to produce up to half of the world’s Mo-99 demand weekly. What's next: Eden is set to submit its construction permit application to the NRC, with plans to enhance production capabilities and possibly expand into Canada. This move ensures operational flexibility and meets growing demand for new radiotherapies. Go deeper: Read the full interview on Nuclear NewsWire.

JAMA study finds increased cancer risk near St. Louis’s Coldwater Creek

A study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association claims to have found an increased rate of cancer for people who grew up living close to Coldwater Creek near St. Louis Lambert International Airport in Missouri. Coldwater Creek was found to be contaminated with low-level radiation from improperly stored materials from uranium processing associated with the Manhattan Project. Go deeper on Nuclear NewsWire.

Geoffrey Rothwell: My story—ANS member since 1986

When I was 10, in October 1963, my family moved to Richland, Wash., so that my father could work for Vitro-Hanford Engineering Services, later for Bechtel, on the design of the Fast Flux Test Facility. I was a “new” kid throughout my excellent education in the Richland School District. It was the mid-1960s, and I wanted to be a rocket scientist or aerospace engineer.
